Summary

Cici dreams of being a novelist。 Her favorite subject: people, especially adults。 She’s been watching them and taking notes。 Everybody has one special secret, Cici figures, and if you want to write about people, you need to understand what’s hiding inside them。 But now she’s discovered something truly strange: an old man who disappears into the forest every Sunday with huge pots of paint in all sorts of colors。 What is he up to? Why does he look so sad when he comes back?

In a graphic novel interwoven with journal notes, scrapbook pieces, and doodles, Cici assembles clues about the odd and wonderful people she’s uncovered, even as she struggles to understand the mundane: her family and friends。

The Cici's Journal series is filled with beautiful illustrations, heartfelt journal entries, and mysteries。 Cici is so curious。 She just can't help finding mysteries to solve。 In the first journal, there is a mysterious man entering and exiting the forest with paint buckets。 What is he doing with all that paint? In the second journal, Cici notices an elderly neighbor who leaves her home each week with a book in her hands。 Where does she go with that book? In both cases, Cici enlists her friends for help。 Lena and Erica are busy with their own lives and Cici gets impatient。 Her shortcuts cause relationship problems with her friends and especially her mom。 The reader has a front row seat to the fascinating discoveries Cici makes with the help of her friends and her mentor, Mrs。 Flores。 As a bonus, both mysteries teach Cici and her friends about history。 Looking forward to "Lost and Found," the next chapter in Cici's Journals。 。。。more

This was a wonderful book, interspersing journal pages with graphic novel panels to tell the story of an 11 year old girl, Cici and her friends solving mysteries in her small French provincial town。 The first story revolves around a mysterious man with paint cans in the forest which leads to a wonderful adventure that brings joy to the whole town in the end。 The second adventure revolved around an old woman observed taking the bus every week at precisely the same time with precisely the same boo This was a wonderful book, interspersing journal pages with graphic novel panels to tell the story of an 11 year old girl, Cici and her friends solving mysteries in her small French provincial town。 The first story revolves around a mysterious man with paint cans in the forest which leads to a wonderful adventure that brings joy to the whole town in the end。 The second adventure revolved around an old woman observed taking the bus every week at precisely the same time with precisely the same book (extra points for that one ending up in the local library!) I loved everything about this book。 How often do you observe strangers and ask yourself what they might be doing? I loved that Cici had the wherewithal to follow the clues to the end, and that by solving these simple life mysteries she brought joy to others around her。 Plus, Cici and her mother have some mysteries of their own that I hope will shake out in future installments! 。。。more

3 1/2 stars。 The pace can be plodding at times, but there were many moments of real heart, especially in the first part。 Could definitely see this being adapted into a TV show for kids。

Great insights on the simple act of the power of just observing, & lessons for future story writers。 Cici also learns some valuable life lessons in here。 For example, being honest with those you love, & valuing your friendships。 The artwork by Aurélie Neyret is BEAUTIFUL! I loved everything about this, & I’m excited to continue on! Highly recommend!💜 。。。more

Cici’s Journal is a mix of graphic novel and journal pages written by a girl named Cici, who loves writing and mysteries。 The book is split into two parts, each focused around a different mystery。 The first is a mysterious man who disappears into the woods - where could he be going? The second is about a woman who keeps checking out the same library book every week。While some parts of this story were cute, there were a lot of issues with it。 First of all, I had a big problem with the fact that E Cici’s Journal is a mix of graphic novel and journal pages written by a girl named Cici, who loves writing and mysteries。 The book is split into two parts, each focused around a different mystery。 The first is a mysterious man who disappears into the woods - where could he be going? The second is about a woman who keeps checking out the same library book every week。While some parts of this story were cute, there were a lot of issues with it。 First of all, I had a big problem with the fact that Erica, Cici’s friend who is the only Black character in the story, had no real character traits other than complaining and being angry。 Cici mentions several times that Erica always has something to complain or grumble about。 When Cici is being a bad friend, Erica gets angry - visually, almost cartoonishly angry - and blows up at her, while white friend Lena is the mediator。 While Lena isn’t much more of a developed character than Erica, she does have other aspects to her character - for example, she loves to take photos。 Erica, though, we know almost nothing about other than that she’s friends with Lena and is always complaining and angry。 While sometimes this anger is justified - Cici is being a bad friend - it comes off as very stereotypical and was a poor idea。Also, this story apparently takes place in modern day, considering things such as a poster for a 2017 event。 So why does the library still use checkout cards where someone writes their name down? They have their catalog online, as seen by Cici looking up a book。 There is no way their checkout procedure wouldn’t also be online。 This may feel nitpicky, and the checkout card forms the entire basis of the part two mystery, but it’s really unrealistic。 The librarian’s behavior was also terrible。 This is probably more obvious to me since I’m a librarian, but the amount of information she gives out about one of the patrons is appalling。 This is completely unprofessional and could get her fired - librarians can’t just tell people what others are reading, what their habits are, etc! She’s also super judgmental about the fact that the older woman only reads one book, and while I’m not saying there aren’t judgmental librarians, it just felt like a poorly written character written by someone who doesn’t actually understand how libraries work。 (This whole plotline made that abundantly clear, honestly。)There are some cute, moving parts to this book, and I even found myself tearing up at some of the zoo scenes。 Overall, though, I think the negative aspects of the story - especially the stereotypical, undeveloped Black friend - completely outweigh the positive ones。 Giving it two stars because the artwork was cute and for the few sweet/interesting aspects of part one。 。。。more

Rating: 3。5Cici’s Journal contains a collection of small stories within。 The first volume contains two “mysteries” that Cici is determined to solve about particular elderly from her town。 The stories are fun and always contain a deeper message。 I liked how parts of the graphic novel were set out like a scrapbook, and the colours / artwork used。 Cici also develops as a character throughout the stories。 She’s not perfect, and is given time to reflect on some of her wrongdoings and repair relations Rating: 3。5Cici’s Journal contains a collection of small stories within。 The first volume contains two “mysteries” that Cici is determined to solve about particular elderly from her town。 The stories are fun and always contain a deeper message。 I liked how parts of the graphic novel were set out like a scrapbook, and the colours / artwork used。 Cici also develops as a character throughout the stories。 She’s not perfect, and is given time to reflect on some of her wrongdoings and repair relationships that she had neglected。I would definitely encourage a younger audience to give this a go! I thought it was a well-rounded middle grade read。Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an e-copy to review。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review。 All opinions are my own。A fantastically fun graphic novel about a young, aspiring novelist Cici and her adventures solving mysteries around the small town where she and her friends live。 There are two mysteries in this volume, the first being about an older gentleman who is always covered in paint and leaves the forest at the same time each day and the second about an older lady whose mystery lies i Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review。 All opinions are my own。A fantastically fun graphic novel about a young, aspiring novelist Cici and her adventures solving mysteries around the small town where she and her friends live。 There are two mysteries in this volume, the first being about an older gentleman who is always covered in paint and leaves the forest at the same time each day and the second about an older lady whose mystery lies in the library。 Both parts of the book were engaging and fun to read。 I also loved the characters and thought the mysteries were realistic and fun to figure out。 I look forward to reading the next volume! 。。。more
